Hey there. I have songs about cats. Funny, I don’t strike me as someone who would have songs about cats, but there you go. Then again, I live on a farm with lots of feral cats. Cats have also featured heavily in my dreams over the years. It is just, I guess, if I met me, as I said, I wouldn’t strike me as a person all that concerned with cats. But I could be wrong. I am wrong.
CAT ON A FARM
I wish I were a cat on a farm
Coz then I would have lots of things to pounce on
I wish I were a cat on a farm
Coz then I could sleep in the straw
I dream of being a cat on a farm
I’d start a family
Why not?
I’d start the family I haven’t got
I’d teach young junior how to run and how to jump and how to catch a bird
I’d teach him how to understand those silly humans with their silly words
We’d be a family
A loving family
A happy family
A perfect family
I wish I were a cat on a farm so then I could prowl around the ditches
I wish I were a cat on a farm pretending I’m a tiger in the wild
I dream of being a cat on a farm
I’d take my family out for lunch
We’d hear that little bluebird carcass crunch
I’d teach young junior how to steal and how to eat and how to snoop around
I’d teach him how to sneak inside the pantry door without making a sound
We’d be a family of cats living on a farm
Living like the monarchy inside our palace barn
We’d take a holiday in the forest by the hill
Where there’s lots of things to chase and lots of things to kill
And then we’d pack up and say enough’s enough
Come on let’s go home
Come on let’s go home
Come on let’s go home
Note: The above track is a recording from Windows & Doors, a collaboration between myself and Dutch musician, Wim Oudijk. Wim sadly passed away last year. He was a warm, generous man who I never met in real life. His music is excellent – he was a kind of Dutch Van Dyke Parks. You can hear his work at Discofair. Wim produced and arranged this song. I composed it. Todd Dillingham sang it.
To incentivise Wim, I would sometimes give him very basic piano chord phone demos so as to blanken his canvas. This is my very basic piano chord phone demo.
CATS ALIVE INSIDE YOUR MIND
They’re coming out of the bayleaf with that sick look in their eyes
It’s in the bayleaf where they look at you and happily multiply.
They’re coming out of the bayleaf and they’re all so terrified
It’s in the bayleaf where congenitally weak ones go to die
They multiply
Cats alive inside your mind
They’re hiding in the corn shed with their sickly progeny
It’s in the corn shed where the angry mothers try to attack me
I hear them cry
We will multiply
Cats alive inside your mind
Cats alive inside your mind
Cats alive inside your mind
Cats
NOTE: This is a fairly old demo at this stage. It’s from my toy Argos microphone, primitive-recording-technique era of demos. I think I have another cat song but I can’t remember what or where it is.
